Hello from Regan Meares
I would like to begin this article by thanking all of those who prayed for me and supported me as I was licensed as Team Vicar for Yate on Thursday the 14th of May.
My journey into ministry began in Hanham where I did Licensed Lay ministry for 7 years. During these 7 years, I led worship, did readings and led intercession prayers. This was an important time for me because I learnt about the power of God's word and the comfort, inspiration and love it brings to those who hear it. During this time, I felt that God may be calling me to become a priest. I studied for 2 years at Trinity College and was ordained after I had completed my studies. After college, I begin a 3-year curacy at St Stephens in Soundwell. This was a great experience for me as I began to learn how to do funerals, weddings, baptisms and Holy Communion. After my time in Soundwell, I did a placement in Patchway for 8 months. My placement in Patchway was more community focused and I spent a lot of time in schools and with the various youth groups. I am grateful to God for my time in both Soundwell and Patchway as I have learnt so much from both churches. The most challenging part of working in both places was having to say goodbye. Even though it was difficult to say goodbye to people, God has provided comfort for me through the many friends I have made, many of whom will be my friends for life.
During my time as a curate, I also did placements in prison, hospital and university as a volunteer chaplain. One of the most important roles of a chaplain is to listen to the people who are around you. My time in the university and in the prison has shifted my focus outside the church walls and onto the many challenges that we face in society today. It is no secret that the rapid rise of technology has caused major changes within society and the way in which young people

are growing up today. I remember when I was growing up, we just had one landline which hardly worked. Internet was still very new and mobile phones had not evolved to the level that they are on now. Things seemed much simpler back then. The challenges that have arisen from social media and AI make it extremely difficult for young people to navigate the world around them today. 2 Timothy chapter 4 encourages us to preach the word both in season and out of season.
Therefore, amid all the challenges we face within society, God has called us to carry his word out into the world. As I look at the Yate area, I am excited at the opportunities to work with young people in church, schools and out in the community. One of my main aims is to provide the youth and young families with a sense of value and identity by inviting them into the church and much more importantly into God’s amazing family. By doing so, I believe that we will not only be able to build our churches in Yate but we will also be able to build Gods Kingdom here on earth.
As I begin my role as Team Vicar, I look forward to working with the rest of the team in Yate. I believe that God is at work in this area and there are exciting times ahead. I take comfort that while we work as a team to do the will of God, Jesus is always with us. I leave you with bible scripture from Matthew chapter 28:
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Mothers’ Union Yate – 18th June 2026
Teddy Bear’s Picnic
150 years ago, Mary Sumner, a Vicar’s wife, founded a support group for mothers and children, that would go on to become the global phenomenon that is ‘The Mothers’ Union’.
To commemorate this anniversary, many events are taking place throughout the year across the world. The Mothers Union Bristol Diocese (and Yate Branch) are no exception! |
From 12.30pm on Thursday 18th June our meeting will be a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, at St Mary’s Church, hopefully in the Churchyard, sheltered from the sunshine by the leafy trees! or alternatively in the Church sheltering from the rain that Teddy Bears really do not care for! There will be a prize for the best dressed Teddy.
All members, friends and visitors are very welcome to come along to this fun event to celebrate the 150th birthday of the Mothers’ Union Organisation and the 111th birthday of Mothers’ Union Yate.
Please bring your own picnic with drink and a folding chair if you have one. And bear of course!

Farewell from Sue Gent
We would like to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers and very generous gift as we leave Yate parish. All are very much appreciated, and Sue is particularly grateful for the gift of piano lessons and books and treats! It has been a privilege to be involved in the parish in the time of transition.
We will miss you all but hope to keep in touch and to see you in Yate or Chipping Sodbury, and expect to visit the churches occasionally.

Faith and Fellowship on Fridays 10.00am–11.30am at St Nix
We are a mixed group of people from across the parish, from within church and without, all with a desire to learn more from Bible study and discussion. We share stories of our lives and our faith journey, whether just beginning or more well-travelled!! We laugh together and at times share a tear or two.
Prayer is important to us as we seek to actively live out our belief in Jesus among the people we are with every day. We readily welcome others to join us. |

Thursday Communion at 10.00am
Compline @8pm
Before the lockdown happened, we had recorded the saying of Compline. We ask that each evening at 8pm we light a candle in our window and pray together for our nation using the words of the Compline service - it takes just over 5 minutes.
