Week 3 Comfort and joy in Jesus’ birth
Mary’s Gift
May your hearts be filled with joy as you hear the song of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Thanks be to God.
Last Sunday we lit the Candles of Hope and Promise, and of Light.
(light the first two candles)
Today we light the third Candle of Advent, the Candle of Mary’s Gift, as we remember her acceptance of God’s gift of Jesus.
46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me — holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants
forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
(Luke 1 NIV)
Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, compassionate and gentle: to you be praise and glory for ever. Your light has shone in our dark world through Mary’s acceptance to be the mother of Jesus. We ask that we who have seen your glory may daily be renewed in your image and prepared like her for the coming of your Son, who is the Lord and Saviour of all.
(light the third candle.)
Alleluia, alleluia. Mary Mother of Jesus, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Alleluia!
