Making Jesus Visible as a Volunteer! By Diana Carter
I was new to Yate and St. Nix, when there was a call from the front for someone to help in the kitchen for their recently opened Lunch Club, so I volunteered. It was February 2018 and off I went like a lamb to the slaughter. When I arrived on that Monday morning there was a wonderful curate stirring a soup she had made from nothing with one arm whilst the other arm was stirring the makings of chocolate muffins. Fortunately, Sue Harrison (St. Nix paid administrator) appeared. Sue was our 'manager'. She was supposed to be working but showed me where everything was to lay up for the dozen guests we were expecting, and I was on my way. The next week someone else turned up to help, brand new too. A further person eventually joined us from sick leave and from then we were a tight knit little team supporting each other.
Over the years we have very gratefully received help by way of cooked food from a wide variety of people. Sue would fetch a box of vegetables donated by Lidl on a Monday morning, and from that we had to make soup. Although the three of us could cook somehow all common sense left us the first time we made a soup - cauliflower and potato. It was so thick and flavoured with Marmite (?!) it stood up in peaks, but the guests never complained, and we learnt from our mistake.
As the years progressed the Lunch Club has changed and adapted to circumstances and ideas but basically it has remained the same - soup, pudding, tea or coffee all for the princely sum of £2.50, and of course open to all. We do our best to Make Jesus Visible. We can cook in advance because we now have a freezer, gone are the Lidl boxes. Unfortunately, the original volunteers have had to give up, and we have another good team that continues to work like a well-oiled machine, filling in the gaps when there are holidays and illness.
Was it worth volunteering? Oh yes! I have learnt a lot and realise that serving others brings its own rewards and pleasure. After 7 years it is time for me to retire, and I now wait to see what else God has in mind for me to do. |

Support our Churches One Step (Or Pedal) at a Time Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust (GHCT) is delighted to announce that Ride+Stride is back for 2025, taking place on Saturday 13th of September. This annual event invites people across Gloucestershire and North Bristol to visit churches by walking, cycling, horse-riding or using public transport, all while raising money to support their upkeep. Funds raised are split between the participant’s chosen church and GHCT, which provides grants for vital repair and improvement work.In 2024, Ride+Stride raised over £36,000, supporting projects such as roof repairs, fire door replacements and improved wheelchair access. If you’d like to get involved this year, whether by taking part in the Ride+Stride itself or by putting on an event at your church, further information can be found at: https://ghct.org.uk/ride-and-stride
As in previous years, St James church in Westerleigh will be raising funds for Ride+Stride with a community breakfast. All are welcome to come between 9 and 10.45 am for a freshly-cooked full English breakfast or lighter option (including vegetarian or gluten-free), and your donations will help further the work of GHCT in supporting churches in our area.
Also in our parish St Peter’s and St Mary’s will be open to visitors all day with refreshments available. |

Tree Fest 2025
Our Christmas tree festival is ten years old this year so we have decided to celebrate by ‘branching out’ (excuse the pun) across the whole of Yate Parish under a new name: ‘Tree Fest 2025’. The festival, which will run from Friday 28th November to Saturday 6th December, will be familiar in lots of ways but will also feature some new events, participants and locations. Below is a short synopsis of our plans with dates for your diaries. There’s lots more going on behind the scenes to finalise details which we will share with you as they become available - please watch the Parish website and magazines for update. And of course if you’d like to get involved we would love to hear from you, drop us a line with your contact details to parishoffice@yateparish.org
There will be a festival opening night in St Mary’s church on Friday 28th November featuring Port of Bristol Shanty Crew, with light refreshments.
On Saturday 29th November and Saturday 6th December St Mary’s church will be open for the public to view the decorated church and trees. There will be a programme of half-hour musical interludes on both days, including well-known local group Fascinating Rhythm, and light refreshments throughout the day.
On Monday 1st December you can enjoy a delicious afternoon tea with seasonal music (details tbc) and bellringing at St Peter’s Church, Wapley.
St James in Westerleigh will again be hosting their very popular wreath-making workshops on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd November, as well as a Christmas Fair with a special visitor – further details to follow.
And to round off the week there will be an evening concert with the Rock Choir on Saturday 6th December at St Nix – full details to follow. |
St Mary’s church will be open to the public throughout the week Sunday 30th November to Friday 5th December (any exceptions, e.g., school services, will be detailed nearer the time).
Do you have any photos or memorabilia? A pictorial display of the first nine years of the Christmas Tree Festival is planned, so if you have any photos, programmes or other memorabilia you’re happy to lend for the display, please contact us at parishoffice@yateparish.org so that we can liaise with you. |

Weekly at St Mary’s
Thursday Communion at 10.00am
Compline @8pm
Before the lockdown happened, we had recorded the saying of Compline. We ask that each evening at 8pm we light a candle in our window and pray together for our nation using the words of the Compline service - it takes just over 5 minutes.
Visit the parish website and click on the recordings to listen; you will find the words of the service there too.
