A Foretaste of Heaven

As you read this, we have entered all the excitement of the Football World Cup. Slightly different this year as the timings in the USA are difficult to work with, and it’s not ideal to do all the bbqs, big get-togethers, family gatherings starting just

before or just after midnight! All across England and Scotland, households will be lulled into that euphoric state - how far will our team progress this time? Each time around our hopes are raised, and then dashed, whether it be David Beckham’s leg or Maradona’s hand or the dreaded penalty shootout, or just the fact that other teams are often better than us… but maybe, just maybe this year it will all be different??!

The other thing that’s different, and quite fun, is that there are more countries represented – some territories such as Curacao I had never heard of before. It’s great when so many countries get together for a sports festival. For just a few weeks, the world can tell a different story of celebrating the vibrancy of different cultures coming together – and while England and Scotland keep winning our moods will be very upbeat!

It's often not long after these global sports events that the mood changes and once more wars, suffering and sadness

become the main focus of world events. But there’s a wonderful prophecy and vision that comes towards the end of the Bible in the book of Revelation. It talks about a massive crowd that

no-one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and

language, standing before the throne of God. In the midst of all the troubles in the world both present and future, this is a

vision of the destiny of the world and its population: God is

calling people from all backgrounds into his Kingdom and to live in a changed world where God and his goodness and love take centre stage.

That’s why the church is all about bringing people together, about creating family no matter what anyone’s background is

building a culture of acceptance and wonder, as we all go on a journey of transformation, leaving our old regrets and habits behind, and taking on Jesus’ way of life.

So, whether it’s St Mary’s near Yate Centre, St Nix in

Abbotswood, St James at Westerleigh, or St Peter’s tucked away in Wapley, that’s what our aim is – to bring people

together around the throne of God.  A foretaste of heaven, a joy to begin to experience that will go on and on well beyond

whichever country is handed the World Cup every 4 years. And there is definitely a place for you – and, if you live with others, a place for your whole family.

Our prayers for everyone to have a happy and peaceful

summer and see you soon!

Readings for Morning and Evening Prayer

The Table below has the readings for Morning and Evening

prayer. Prayer books are available from the Parish Office.

Faith and Fellowship on Fridays

10.00am–11.30am at St Nix

We are a mixed group of people from across the parish,

from within church and without, all with a desire to learn

more from Bible study and discussion. We share stories of our lives and our faith journey, whether just beginning or more

well-travelled!!  We laugh together and at times share a tear

or two.

Prayer is important to us as we seek to actively live out our

belief in Jesus among the people we are with every day. We readily welcome others to join us.

Weekly at St Mary’s

Thursday Communion at 10.00am

Compline @8pm

Before the lockdown happened, we had recorded the saying of Compline. We ask that each evening at 8pm we light a candle in our window and pray together for our nation using the words of the Compline service - it takes just over 5 minutes.

Visit the parish website and click on the recordings to listen; you will find the words of the service there too.
